In 1906 the Supreme Court upheld a Department of Justice ruling that Standard Oil was a monopoly. This led to the breakup of the company into Chevron, Esso, Mobil, Amoco, Conoco and Arco. The companies did not really compete vigorously against each other and the public did not really benefit, however the shareholders became even richer.
