In the 18th century in North American missionaries were always trying to convert the native Americans to Christianity. Occom was the first student in an academy for Indian youths which was founded by Eleazer Wheelock. Occom became a popular preacher and in 1766 Wheelock sent him to England to raise funds for educating Indians. Occum was very successful and returned to American with 11,000 pounds in contributions. Instead of using the money for educating native Americans Wheelock used the money to establish Dartmouth  college which primarily educated white students.
